Voluntary Code for The Advertising, Marketing and Labelling

■VOLUNTARY CODE FOR THE ADVERTISING AND MARKETING OF ALCOHOL BEVERAGES AND THE LABELLING OF ALCOHOL BEVERAGE CONTAINERS

The "Japan Liquor Industry Council," established by organizations in the alcoholic beverage industry, enacted the "Voluntary Code for Advertising and Marketing of Alcohol Beverages" in 1988. After several revisions, it now adheres to the "Voluntary Code for Advertising and Marketing of Alcohol Beverages and Labeling of Alcoholic Beverage Containers," which stipulates rules for advertising, promotion, and labeling of alcoholic beverages.

Alcoholic beverage manufacturers, recognizing the intoxicating nature of alcoholic beverages, must not only comply with laws and regulations regarding underage drinking and drunk driving, but also fulfill social responsibilities such as preventing inappropriate drinking and fostering a responsible drinking environment. To this end, they have established voluntary standards related to advertising, promotion, and labeling of alcoholic beverages, and continuously review them in light of recent changes in the environment surrounding alcoholic beverages, aiming to further respond to social demands.

Matters concerning alcohol and health issues
- Content and methods of cautionary statements in advertising and promotion, expressions not to be used, times when television advertising is not permitted, etc.
- Content and methods of labeling on alcoholic beverage containers, target containers, etc.
To ensure the fairness and effectiveness of voluntary standards, the "Alcohol Advertising Review Committee" has been established within the Japan Alcohol Health and Medical Association as a third-party organization.
